Elsaesser Fellow Jonathan Harris Adds to his Report on the Gulf Coast’s Maritime History
Jonathan Harris, C-112, winner of the 2019 Armin E. Elsaesser III Fellowship, has added more photos and information on his project website, “Pirates, Blockades and Commerce: an expedition to explore the maritime history, fortifications, and lighthouses of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.” He plans to continue adding more to the website, and describes his research opportunity as “awesome!”
Jonathan, a geologist and former SEA crewmember, is an education and outreach coordinator at Mississippi State University. He has spent much the past year exploring the Gulf Coast from New Orleans, LA to Cedar Key, FL, by boat and on foot, documenting the fortifications, lighthouses, and other historical structures of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The region has a rich maritime history, much of which is not well documented. Jonathan plans to produce a publication with photographs of his research, and to make a presentation at SEA’s Woods Hole campus at a date to be determined.
