Resources for Faculty and Advisors

Programs

SEA has been a leader in ocean education since its inception in 1971.  Today, more than 50 years later, SEA offers multidisciplinary ocean-focused academic programs at our Woods Hole campus in Cape Cod, Massachusetts; aboard our two tall ship sailing school vessels; and in coastal communities in the Atlantic and Pacific.

With a focus on ocean science and blue humanities, SEA offers opportunities for students in all majors.  SEA is approved and/or affiliated with colleges and universities across the US and welcomes students from US and international institutions of higher education including public and private colleges, research universities; minority-serving institutions; and community colleges.  Find a list of partner institutions below.

SEA’s institutional relations team works with colleges, universities, high schools, and other partners to facilitate student participation in our programs. The institutional relations manager for your region is your primary contact for all things SEA and is available to assist in many ways:

  • Providing information and updates about SEA programs
  • Visiting campus for study abroad fairs, information sessions, and meetings with study abroad staff and faculty
  • Answering questions about academics, admissions, health and safety, and other SEA policies
  • Discussing program approval, billing arrangements, and affiliation agreements
  • Facilitating connections between SEA faculty and staff and partner institutions
  • Communicating with home institutions in case of any student issues during the program

Boston University – School of Record and Transcripts

SEA has been affiliated with Boston University (BU) for over 50 years and BU continues to serve as SEA’s school of record today.  All SEA courses have been approved by BU’s course evaluation process and BU holds a continuing membership on the SEA Board of Trustees.  A formal Academic Advisory Board, including a BU representative, reviews SEA programs and courses on a regular basis.

Students can be registered at BU during their SEA program and receive an official BU transcript upon successful completion. Alternatively, a home institution may elect to grant direct credit upon receipt of an SEA grade report.

Visiting SEA Programs

SEA welcomes individual site visits from study abroad staff and faculty at colleges and universities and other partners at the Woods Hole, MA campus; in coastal communities program locations; and on board ships, as scheduling and space allows.

Each year, SEA organizes group site visits to showcase various SEA program models and locations.  These programs are carefully designed to help participants understand SEA academics, the student experience, and opportunities for  field research.

SEA also hosts open ship events at various times and locations throughout the year.
