Natalie Marshall has been selected as the winner of the 2022 Armin E. Elsaesser Fellowship. She plans to travel to Spain to make a documentary about the research vessel Heraclitus, and the meaning it holds for the people who have sailed aboard her.

A graduate of Bard College, Natalie served as steward aboard both the SSV Corwith Cramer and SSV Robert C. Seamans between 2018 and 2022.

The R/V Heraclitus is an 85-foot ferrocement Chinese junk built in 1975 that spent four decades doing worldwide expeditions of scientific and cultural discovery. Voyages took the ship from the Amazon River to Antarctica, and beyond.  It is now in drydock in Spain being restored by volunteers, including Natalie.

Natalie wrote: “The ship was built by a group of friends and colleagues who dreamed of creating projects in of the major biomes around the world to demonstrate their ideas about how humans, nature, science, technology, art, and culture could all coexist and inform each other…. The film I want to make would explore what it is about this ship… that seems to attract so many unique individuals of diverse backgrounds like a magnet.”
