Can protected marine sanctuaries like the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) benefit highly migratory species, like tuna? That’s the topic of a report recently published in Scientific Reports.

The report, Evidence and patterns of tuna spawning inside a large no-take Marine Protected Area, was co-authored by Dr. Jan Witting, SEA Professor of Oceanography, who has led numerous SEA Semester research voyages to the Phoenix Islands. The report is based on data collected over many years by undergraduate students enrolled in SEA Semester’s Protecting the Phoenix Islands summer program.

The report was featured in MIT News, where the lead author, Christina Hernández, is a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.
