Description of location: At anchor in Smugglers Cove

Hello from the SSV Robert C. Seamans! This is Craig Marin, the Blue Humanities faculty on board. We are currently anchored just outside of Whangarei Harbour with plans to get underway for Auckland early tomorrow morning. It was a short transit out from the marina, but we are excited to have our dock lines stowed for now.

The last three days have involved a great deal of orientation, training, and generally adjusting to all the spaces of the ship that will be our home for the next six weeks. We have all been very busy since the long drive up from Auckland (when I hope all the students took the time to connect to family and friends with their phones). Now that all those phones have been tucked away and our community of student and professional crew have turned all their attention to the ship, I would like to kick off our daily blog.

Please stayed tuned for student and professional crew accounts of our voyage. I’ll leave it to the next few bloggers to provide you all with more details of their experiences. Perhaps you will hear about the temperature of the water in this little bay we are in…

Fair winds!
