Description of location
Motor-sailing through Vineyard Sound toward our anchorage in Menemsha Bight, Martha’s Vineyard.
A fun-filled morning of hands-on skill training that included furling the jib on the head rig and climbing aloft! And then, what we have all been waiting for, casting off the dock lines, setting sails, and waving goodbye to Woods Hole. We didn’t travel far on this first day, just to a nearby protected anchorage as we get acclimated to the motion of the ocean! But the mood and energy on the ship reached new levels! We are sailing! For a few hours, and then we anchored up for the night. During our evening anchorage we conducted our first scientific deployments of the voyage. In addition to the phytoplankton net and settlement traps we also deployed the shipek grab to collect a sample of seafloor sediments. Everyone slept well after such an eventful day.
Much more sailing and science to come so stay tuned.
Cheers.
