Finally enjoying some downtime to sit down and write this blog to friends and family of all of us aboard Cramer! It feels like it’s been ages, but seconds at the same time since we all moved onto this big white brigantine (sung to the tune of “Yellow Submarine”), and although there has been quite the adjustment period and learning curve to get used to, I’m so grateful of every second I’ve gotten to spend on this ship learning and doing what makes me happiest with some amazing people. Today marks one week since we got underway, and I’m starting to get the hang of all of our responsibilities onboard the Cramer (and it feels so good!).

Today my watch group stood afternoon watch (1300-1900), during which we had ship’s meeting and class time which involved an exciting game of Line Chase designed to help us learn all the functions and positions of each line on the ship; I regret to report that C watch won a close battle for second, but couldn’t pull through with the dub this time around. For the rest of our watch I helped out by standing lookout, taking the helm, and recording weather observations and positions. We handed the deck over to A watch tonight as we sailed into a cool and drizzly night.

Today was a pretty typical day aboard the ship, but even as I write that I remember that every new day in this new home of mine is atypical in that it brings new knowledge, skills, and experiences for which I am endlessly grateful. My first few days on the ship were definitely a challenge considering I was acclimating to a new environment, schedule, and crew, but going through that adjustment period was so worth the time I’m having now. I will say that the sense of comradery between shipmates onboard has allowed me to get past any challenges that came with the new environment, and be able to happily learn things that interest me the most! By tomorrow morning we will be in Grenada, and while I’ve been loving my
time with C watch onboard, I can’t wait to start exploring the islands we’ve been learning so much about.
