About

Greg Koman is a visiting assistant professor at the Sea Education Association and an alumnus of the college program (C-174). Greg directs the Pre-College Oceanography summer program at SEA. During the school year, Greg is an assistant professor of physical oceanography at the University of Massachusetts Boston and is a guest investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. As an oceanographer, Greg primarily observes large scale currents through mooring operations and regularly goes to sea to conduct research. Greg studies the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation as part of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), which is an international trans-basin observing system across the North Atlantic subpolar gyre that has monitored fluxes of heat, mass, and freshwater since 2014.
Previous to Umass/SEA, Greg was a postdoctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He recieved his PhD in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami in 2020. Previous to oceanography, Greg was a college sailing coach and U.S. Sailing Coach of the Year. He continues to hold a U.S. Coast Guard 50 ton Master Captain’s License with sail endorsement
