SEA Unveils New Logo and Website, Launching a New Era of Ocean Education
For over 50 years, Sea Education Association (SEA) has cultivated a proud legacy of educating and inspiring ocean scholars, stewards, and leaders. As pioneers in the areas of tall ship sailing school vessels, blue water experience for undergraduates, and field-based ocean research for students, SEA has impacted the lives of over 10,000 alumni. With a home base in the oceanographic research community of Woods Hole, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, SEA’s focus for many years has been preparing students for study of the ocean while at sea, with the primary content of ocean science and maritime studies.
The organization has been evolving since its founding in 1971 and is now entering a new stage. As we navigate through the UN Decade of the Ocean, SEA’s mission has never been more relevant. In 2023, building on its successful coastal community based high school programs, SEA announced the addition of coastal community programming to the undergraduate portfolio. This expansion of SEA’s program offerings meets the interests of current students in a variety of program formats and the urgent needs of the planet. The inclusion of coastal community programs in both the Atlantic and the Pacific broadens educational opportunities, expands program accessibility and inclusivity, and strengthens community engagement. Like SEA’s high school students, SEA’s undergraduates now have a wide array of programs to choose from to meet their academic interests and personal goals.
In celebration of this expansion, SEA is pleased to unveil a new logo and website that embodies our mission and values, with an emphasis on critical topics such as climate change, coral reef conservation, marine biodiversity, and sustainable coastal communities. With input from a range of stakeholders including faculty and staff, alumni, and partner institutions, SEA developed a logo that symbolizes the organizational focus on multidisciplinary ocean education to inspire the next generation of leaders. From symbolizing beautiful sunsets on shore to standing lookout on dawn watch at sea on a tall ship, SEA’s new logo is not just a design; it reflects the meaningful experiences all SEA students share. Like a sunrise signaling a new day, the logo stands as a symbol of hope and possibility, reminding us of the importance of our ongoing commitment to ocean education in all its forms.
SEA’s redesigned website incorporates the new logo and provides updated messaging that reflects the expanded portfolio of programs. SEA has long been known for its excellence in ocean science—the new site also recognizes SEA’s expertise in the blue humanities, which examine the human relationship to the ocean from a variety of disciplines including sociology, history, cultural and literary studies, economics, and the arts.
As SEA moves forward with its mission, the organization is steadfast in its commitment to empowering individuals to become advocates for the ocean. SEA is proud to unveil its new logo and website and invites everyone to join in this journey towards a healthier and more vibrant marine environment. Together, let us continue to inspire and educate the next generation of ocean scholars, stewards, and leaders. Our ocean depends on it.
