Today, B cottage was blessed with the opportunity to chill at “Chappy” (Chapoquoit) Beach, after an eventful week filled with field work, lectures, and 4th of July festivities. While at the beach we reflected our memorable week. Starting out the week, we toured Woods Hole and specifically, the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  We also got a tour of the “Cramer”, SEA’s very own sailboat that is used to take students out to sea. On Tuesday, we learned about Primary and Secondary production which is the production of organic matter from inorganic substances. On Wednesday, we collected more data on crab burrows, sediment composition, and salinity, by using transects and quadrats, at Sippewisset Marsh. On Thursday, we went back to the field but this time to a new marsh, Waquoit Bay. Here, we learned about current restoration projects happening in the Bay and how human activity leads to degradation of salt marshes. On Friday, we continued learning about the impact humans have on the ocean. Our PA, Hunnie, taught us about how sound in the ocean can influence the behavior of Sand Dollars and our other PA, Elle, taught us about watersheds on Cape Cod.

Looking back on the second week of camp, all of us in Pre-College have grown immensely as scientists. We learned how to plan and execute a science experiment, collect water and sediment samples and organize data through excel. With only a few days left, I will forever use these skills that I have learned and I am super grateful for the experience.

The rest of Sunday consisted of sleeping in, enjoying a healthy breakfast and Millie’s cake cookies for breakfast. After a filling breakfast, we threw on our swimsuits and prepared for a relaxing day at the beach. Once we arrived at “Chappy,” some of us were hungry so we went to the West Falmouth Market. After all, half an hour is a very long time to go without food! Once everyone had stocked up on snacks, we headed back to the beach.

We were very lucky because the whole beach was full of people, but we still got spots. The beach was the perfect amount of rest and fun. We spent time lounging, playing spike ball, walking on the beach, and throwing the frisbee.

For dinner, we were blessed with pizzas which turned out very good. After eating we cleaned the house as a part of Sunday reset. After this weekend we are ready for the last couple days of classes!
