Pre-College 2: Oceanography! A July Journey

Tuesday, 14 July 2026
SEA Campus, Falmouth, Massachusetts
Yesterday, students of the second session of Pre-College Oceanography arrived at SEA’s campus in Falmouth with their families.
Today, SEA program assistants Elle, Marcus, Kameran, and Bella embarked on a familiar journey with a new set of faces.
Students were introduced to their professors and their research backgrounds and given an introduction to the space they will call home for the next three weeks.
After a preliminary lecture, the group drove to the science village of Woods Hole. The group explored the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Discovery Center. They learned about the history of the Alvin and ocean science on the Cape. The students were particularly interested in shark ecology.

Following the Discovery Center, the students had free time to explore Woods Hole independently. They ate pastries at Pie in the Sky, crossed the drawbridge, perused the aisles of Woods Hole Market, and said “Hi” to Rachel Carson at Garbage Beach. The students and PAs coincidentally met up on the way to Stony Beach and enjoyed watching beachgoers while sitting on the rocks.
We all rendezvoused at Redfield Laboratory and then walked to the Marine Resource Center (MRC) at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). We heard from MRC director and veterinarian, Lisa Abbo, about all the different animals that the MRC houses and uses for research. Jennifer Walton at the MBL-WHOI library gave us a wonderful overview of the rare book collection and history of the MBL in general.

The final stop on our Woods Hole tour was none other than SEA’s own SSV Corwith Cramer. Crew member Ali Fox took us on board and showed us around the laboratory and below decks. Ali explained what all the science instruments do and readily answered student questions.
The day ended with a wonderful spaghetti and meatball dinner in A Cottage. Everyone is excited for another day full of learning tomorrow!! Today was a wonderful start to our July journey.
