Good morning everyone! Yesterday started out strong as the imposing gale started to peter out around midnight, and the seas began to calm down in the early morning for B watch at dawn. After dawn watch, both the lab crew and deck crew of C watch helped with line handling to prepare the ship for science.

C watch completed many early deployments including dropping the CTD to (for this voyage) an unprecedented 250 meters. They also implemented a Neuston tow, phytoplankton net, and a Secchi disk (good job to Cameryn for guessing the visibility the closest!!). C watch was unfortunately unable to do the Shipek Grab, as the water got too deep too fast. At the very end of morning watch, the science team for C watch received an unexpected kiss from the ocean for all of their hard work.

In the afternoon, we had class and learned some new sailing maneuvers, which we then practiced ourselves. The crew was easily able to lower a sail with the combined might of almost every single student on one line. During class we were fortunate to see a Mola mola waving at us, wishing us luck on the rest of our journey. After class, many people made friendship bracelets in the main salon with string from the library. Once again, Ava made a great dinner. We had two types of pasta in a single sitting (which is unheard of) with extra nooch, of course. She also used our bananas to make a wonderful banana bread! Another beautiful sunset awaited us, made even better by the continuing lack of pirates (knock on wood…)
