Sailing Under the Stars

Good morning everyone! Yesterday we were docked until noontime and ran through many orientation stations to help prepare us to get underway. Part of the orientation was to practice what to do in case of an emergency, such as a fire or man overboard. Something that was fun for the whole crew was using the fire hoses. We additionally put on immersion suits to ready us if we have to abandon ship during an emergency.

Once we got underway, a group of us enjoyed departure by hanging out on top of the lab roof. A little while after we got underway, we got to raise the forward staysail along with the main staysail. It was a very incredible experience, especially passing by a wind turbine farm! As we hit open waters one of our watch groups was lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins swimming beside the Cramer. The later watches got to see the amazing stars that covered the entire sky, and without any light pollution were even able to see the Milky-Way!

Overall the first day of being in our watch groups has been pretty successful, and we are excited to continue sailing the next few days.
