Lauren Baker and Madison Kim, Mountainside High School and The Nightingale-Bamford School

We woke up bright and early at 7:15 to start our day with delicious cinnamon apple muffins and fresh fruit for breakfast. It was delicious! Thanks Cam!

For our first class of the day, which was Oceanography with Dr. Jan Witting, we did a pH experiment and began to learn about the chemistry behind ocean acidification. Then it was off to Nautical Science where we went to several stations to explore different aspects of the subject. One of the class favorites was trying on the Gumby suits, brightly colored survival suits meant to keep you alive in the open ocean. Although they were a bit difficult to get on at first, it was so
much fun to race each other to see who could put on their suit the fastest! We also used a virtual program to practice docking a boat, learned about the distribution of weight of a ship, and even got to explore the inside of a life raft.

After a delicious lunch of pasta salad and kale salad (thanks again, Cam!), it was on to Maritime Studies. We were lucky enough to have a guest speaker, Kitty Hendricks, from the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to talk to us about the history and culture of the local New England tribe. She brought several interesting items like furs and bone tools. It was super interactive and a great way to learn more about the indigenous people of New England.

To finish off the day, we enjoyed fajitas for dinner (thanks for the third time Cam!) and watched an Oceanography-themed movie called Chasing Coral with some popcorn, courtesy of Jan, on the side.
