Going Aloft

SEA campus in Woods Hole, MA and Mystic Seaport Museum.

Throughout the week we experienced a big change in the weather from last week. We had some days of rain and overcast as well as some days of sun.

Over the past weekend, we enjoyed our time at Mystic Seaport Museum. Each day packed full of history and activities. Many of us enjoyed climbing aloft the rigging on the ship we were staying on, the Joseph Conrad. Another fan favorite was the planetarium. We learned how to correctly use a sextant, a tool used for navigation that we will be using on the Cramer. We also participated in a number of team building activities.

This academic week we had Captain Pamela’s class, Ben’s Oceans and Society class, and Jeff’s Introduction to Marine Science class. In Captain Pamela’s class we learned and practiced knots. They are pretty challenging for some of us and not so much for others. In Ben’s class we talked about the Opportunistic Frontier of Piracy and the history of pirates. We also learned about pirate Samuel Bellany. He practically invented the Jolly Roger as his flag (Skull and Bones) and was the “richest” pirate in today’s world according to Forbes Magazine (which isn’t quite that accurate). In Jeff’s class today we presented in our small group projects to the group of eighth-graders and highschoolers from Hampshire Regional High School. We presented it to them because we are going to deploy this mini-boat that they have been working on for about a year. The boat is equipped with GPS, a water temperature sensor, a small camera as well as a small time capsule containing notes and merchandise from their school. Furthermore, Olivia, Quinn, and Harold are going to be studying Bioluminescence; Tina, Max and Linden are going to study Phytoplankton Cities; Sophia is working with Abbey to study Sea Floor Critters; and Kendall is working with Bella and Penelope to study How the Moon Phases effect Zooplankton; Reagan and Sayer are studying Marine Mammals; Dylan, Coop, and Freya are working to study Marine Debris; and then Aubie Adam and Virginia are going to study Seafloor Sediments.
