A Day in Woods Hole: From Darwin to Deep-Sea Discovery

June 27, 2025
Today we started off the morning at 7:00 am to prepare for our tours in Woods Hole. After packing our lunches and eating breakfast, we headed to the van and drove to MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory) for the first tour of the day. At MBL we saw some very old scientific novels (some published as long ago as the 1500s!). Among them was a signed copy of Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species, Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica published in 1726, and even some encyclopedias showing mythical creatures. We also got to hear about the history of MBL, the library stacks, and saw a real Nobel Prize! Next, we walked over to the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) where we did a walking tour of various parts of the campus including the docks, shops where they built HOVs, ROVs, and AUVs (Human Operated Vehicles, Remotely Operated Vehicles, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles). Then we visited the Discovery Center and gift shop. By now everyone was STARVING so we walked to the picnic tables for lunch. After our delicious lunch we got to see the Corwith Cramer, SEA’s expedition boat. It was really cool to see however, it was very tightly packed (looking at the bunk beds could give anyone claustrophobia). The ship also had a wet lab where we learned about what experiments are conducted onboard. Later, we went to the MBL gift shop and saw the NOAA aquarium. They had the most ADORABLE seal ever which wrapped up our tours for the day. Afterwards, some of us decided to head home while others stayed for coffee and more shopping. We got home at around 3:30 and took well needed naps or went to the beach. The day ended with a fun, but chaotic dinner with friends (as usual) and ice cream!
