As the sun refracted through the windows of A cottage, SEASCape woke to a beautiful, quiet, and comfortably warm summer day at Falmouth. To start the day, SEASCape ate breakfast: some had bagels and cream cheese, others chose the classic scrambled eggs, or a simple toast with jam. To continue the August morning, SEASCape attended a lecture based on an excerpt from Dr. Rozwadowski’s Imagined Oceans, a book focusing on the history of human-ocean interactions. The lecture, courtesy of Dr. Mark Long of SEA, discussed Rozwadowski’s book, in addition to other essential ocean topics, such as the importance of preserving the oceans as a means to protect marine life, conserve earth’s ecosystems, and ensure the financial, cultural, and lifelong security for millions of people on an international scale.

Following the lecture, SEASCape headed back to their cottage to indulge in a sandwich bar and make quesadillas for the second meal of the day. With no crumbs left on their plates, SEASCape headed onto their afternoon lecture on human impacts and conservation efforts with the ocean, led by Dr. Kayla Gardner of SEA. To start the lecture, SEASCape watched a documentary focused on the devastating fate of corals and the tragedy of coral bleaching in a Netflix documentary: “Chasing Coral.” Throughout the 2-hour film, students learned more about how coral bleaching works, how it can be prevented, and how serious it is to the future of our planet. Following the film, Kayla lectured the class on how human interactions with the ocean affect marine ecosystems, with an emphasis on human conservation works.

After finishing class for the day, SEASCape went back to A cottage, and started making a delicious ‘kale and potato power bowl’ for their final meal of the day. The bowl was composed of baked, spicy potatoes, onions, and bell peppers. And, as an extra act of kindness, one of the housemates prepared a spectacular sweet, garlic-soy sauce marinated salmon dish, which was gobbled up by the members of A house. To wrap up their busy day, SEASCape participated in a calming painting activity, where members crafted beautiful paintings, some of which were ocean-inspired, and others chose to carefully decorate frames for their paintings. Finally, A house closed their night by going to sleep. With the end to an adventure-packed day, SEASCape can only dream of what they may do tomorrow.
