Hi, this is Cynthia and Gemma, and we are taking over the blog! Today was a really exciting day because we took a field trip to Provincetown, which was two hours away, to learn about the national park and whales in Cape Cod. We started our day earlier than usual by heading to Provincetown at 8 in the morning, and our first stop was at the Cape Cod National Park and got to look around the visitor center and walk through the park. At the visitor center, we learned about the history of Cape Cod and the relationships with the Native Americans on the land through the museum and a short film. Then we stopped at another section of the national park and got to go up the observatory to look at the views and spot some birds. We also completed the Junior Ranger activity packet to obtain a badge!
Finally, we made it to Provincetown and spent an hour exploring cafés and nearby shops. We got matcha and boba and spent time with our friends. Then we walked over to the Center for Coastal Studies to learn about the entanglement of whales at Cape Cod and listened to the story of Spinnaker, who was a young female humpback whale that unfortunately died due to entanglement. We got to learn about the different species of whales and how the center kept records of family trees, and how they identify and spot these whales. They also talked about their efforts to protect the whales by cutting off fishing ropes. After the presentation, we got to look at the skeleton of Spinnaker and look at their labs and what scientists do at the center. We ended the day by playing “I Spy with My Little Eyes” and ”Never Have I Ever” with the whole cottage on the way back to campus.
