Casting Off!

Noon Position: Dyer’s Dock
Weather: Breezy and Sunny, Fall Chill Lingering
Description of Location: Currently at Anchor off Vineyard Haven on the northern side of Martha’s Vineyard
Greetings to all! We left Dyer’s Dock just after lunch today to move on to the next phase of orientation and safety training. We are currently enjoying some time at anchor and the physical separation of land as we move a step closer to readying all on board for the upcoming ocean passage. It has been a busy day.
Getting underway from the dock is a process that takes planning, coordination, and a willingness to be at the ready to safely pitch in during the intricate dance with wind, currents, and ship traffic. With the professional crew handling the ship’s dock lines and other key navigational duties, student crew could watch and participate at key, predetermined moments in the process. So it was that we all worked as a unified crew and bid farewell to land and the group of SEA folks gathered on the wharf to wish us well and help cast off lines.
During the short passage from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven, we all experienced the unique pleasure of feeling the Cramer pull away from the dock, stretch, and limber up for a short “warm up” passage to our anchorage. Along the way, the student crew enthusiastically provided assistance with the stowing of gear and other essential underway activities. Their helpfulness and desire to be engaged has been and continues to be a joy to behold.
Over the next few days, involving short passages and anchoring, we will continue to introduce students to life and work aboard the vessel. I look forward to seeing them gain more and more knowledge and confidence with each passing day. Please stay tuned for more news from Ocean Classroom on the Corwith Cramer!
Gratefully,
Craig Marin
