Hello from the Corwith Cramer! This morning I woke up bright and early at 0530 for a fun day we like to call “crew stew!” It’s basically the same as stu stew, as highlighted by others blog posts, except for the fact I am a deckhand / crew member this time around. The daytime was absolutely gorgeous, sun shining, people smiling, and all-around good vibes from the weather and our ships community.
We started the day strong with a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fruit, and yogurt, followed by berry smoothies as a morning snack. Today is not only my crew stew day but also FIELD DAY!! So, lunch had to be a solid meal as well. Many aboard ship share a love for Mexican food, so we decided on burritos and burrito bowls with lots of yummy toppings. There are two tables in the main salon where everyone gathers for mealtimes, and we set up one table as the burrito table, the other as the burrito bowl table, and it was fun to see what people preferred and hear some strong opinions on which version was superior.
Field day is one of my favorite days, we get to make mama C shine and give her some love cleaning wise. It’s also the one day a week we can play some tunes! It’s been really fun to hear everyone’s different music tastes. My musical library has already expanded.
I am a deckhand on A Watch and our task at hand is making the galley and all the pans and things inside it super clean. We usually separate into 2 groups, a deck team and a galley team that rotates each field day. Deck team takes the duty of scrubbing away at pans and things while galley team makes sure the galley itself sparkles. This time around we have Sara, Cami, Everett and I on galley team while Gray, Tenny, and Ciaran stay on deck!
I am really glad to be on A watch, I feel like each and every student apart of C326 is incredible in their own ways, but I can appreciate how interested, optimistic, and kind everyone apart of A watch is! It’s really fun to watch how great people work as a team, and I love how many laughs we share. I am grateful that our ships community has so much fun together.
Today’s snack for the afternoon will be the regular candy treats along with some green apple slices. An apple a day keeps the dentist away, you know what they say! We also made some midrats this morning, the fun treats left out for those on evening and dawn watches. Our idea for today’s stemmed from a dawn watch tradition of “teatime,” when the deck and lab teams on watch come together on the quarter deck and take a small break to star gaze, ask a fun question, etc. I wanted to make a treat that had some sweetness but wasn’t overbearingly sweet, that would complement a nice cup of tea. One of our amazing stewards Sally mentioned biscottis and it was a done deal! Together Sally and I whipped up batches of pistachio vanilla biscottis, some gluten free for or gluten free friends.
For dinner, we will make soy glaze salmon, roasted carrot and broccoli bowls! This is one of my staples when I cook for myself at home. I love seafood and was excited when Shelby, our amazing head steward, mentioned we had some salmon filets left. I love cooking and baking, so spending a day in the galley is always something I look forward to. I think those days also help us appreciate and understand how much our stewards do to keep us healthy and well fed.
Some of the other highlights include furling on the headrig with A watch, every sunrise and sunset, crocheting, the stars, seeing mahi and tuna swim around the boat, lab deployments and water processing, and so much more. Thanks for reading!
