Final Projects, Climate Calls, and Farewell Moments

July 10, 2025
Hi everyone!
Today we enjoyed a tasty “fend for yourselves” breakfast of english muffins, coffee, and fruit before leaving for our last class with Dr. Greg Koman. In our morning class we learned about the steps our community can take to mitigate global CO2 emissions on a macro and micro scale. The ocean absorbs more than 30% of CO2 in the atmosphere. Increased levels of CO2 can have drastic effects on marine ecosystems, causing ocean acidification and warmer waters. Dr. Koman showed us how easy it is for us to advocate for ourselves and our values to our local congress. He called Elizabeth Warren’s office as a constituent, explaining the need for immediate climate action and conservation efforts to protect our oceans. For lunch, we made a variety of yummy meals: noodle soup, oatmeal, ramen and more.
After lunch we headed to our second session in which we presented our final projects to the whole SEA Pre-College program. It was so interesting to hear what everyone had been working on these past few weeks. The topics spanned from seal migratory patterns, to microplastic pollution in local salt marsh ecosystems, to carbon sequestration in marsh grass. Overall, the projects were all thoroughly researched and well presented. At the end of the class, Dr. Koman shared a few final words with us and we were presented with certificates of completion. It was bittersweet!
We had delicious rice bowls for dinner, topped with grilled turkey, teriyaki sauce and asparagus. After dinner we went to see the recently released Jurassic World Rebirth at the movie theatre! Tomorrow will be our last day of the program, and we hope to make many more exciting memories before we leave!
Sincerely your last Pre-College bloggers,
Lottie and Isabel
