Fish, Facts, and Poke Bowls

July 15, 2025
Today, we reviewed coral primary production and reef invertebrate identification, skills I’m excited to put to use while snorkeling tomorrow at Shark’s Cove. The highlight of my day was visiting the Bishop Museum, where Dr. Richard Pyle served as our guide. He was a wealth of knowledge and generously gave us an insider’s look at the XCoRE collection. He shared countless stories from his career in ichthyology, including the discovery of the Hawaiian native fish named after President Obama, along with many other fascinating accounts. I truly enjoyed listening to Richard, and I know all my peers did as well. It was an incredible opportunity, and I’m very grateful for the experience. Thank you, Richard, if you happen to see this!
The second best part of the day was capping it off with a poke bowl from Safeway in Mānoa. We ended with some sweet treats from Long’s (CVS) and headed home after a long, fulfilling, and enriching day.
