From Darwin to Deep Sea

July 29, 2025
Today, we toured and explored a couple of scientifically based places in Woods Hole. In the morning, we explored Lillie Laboratory. We got to see and flipped through some first edition books, such as Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin. We also got to see and hold a Nobel prize. After, we went to the MBL gift shop, and then the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. In the aquarium, we saw seal feeding, as well as an assortment of sea creatures. After we ate our homemade lunches, we went to the WHOI Ocean Science Discovery Center. In there, we learned about the twilight zone, the Titanic, and sediment.
After, we toured the Corwith Cramer, and learned about life on the boat as well as the scientific devices onboard. To end the learning section of our day, we went into WHOI’s Smith Building, and learned about the underwater vehicles, like the Alvin. From this long day we gathered a vast amount of knowledge and I was able to think about furthering my own career as a future marine biologist. For dinner, we ate sweet potato boats, and after, we tie-dyed shirts for Color Wars. We experienced a heavy day of both learning and bonding!
