Marisol Helms and Ellie Streeper, Chatham Hall High School and Needham High School

Early this morning, we woke up to find delicious smoothie bowls for breakfast, which had an assortment of fruits and granola (thanks Cam!). After our watch chores and meetings, we went to Maritime Studies with Dr. Ali Glassie, our first class of the day. We talked about poems reflecting the historical cod-fishing culture of this region and discussed annotations from a chapter of Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling. Considering the historical context, we discussed both the negative and positive views in this novel.

In Oceanography with Dr. Jan Witting, we conducted an experiment exploring the effects of different water densities as they interacted with each other. We color coded the different waters and the result was quite stunning! For our last class, we had Nautical Sciences with Captain Chris. After a quick briefing on damage response on a vessel, we partook in a demonstration outside. Groups were presented with a leaking pipe system and a variety of tools to fix it. Upon completion, the pipes flowed into a slip n’ slide! (Spoiler alert there was a water fight!)

After classes, the RAs organized a full group trip to the knob at Quisset Harbor, where we got to swim in the ocean and enjoy the afternoon. The water was cold, but that stopped no one from jumping right in! Hours of fun later, we returned to eat a specially prepared dinner by Dr. Glassie: Bacalhau. This dish is made with salted cod and was quite delicious despite early hesitations. After dinner, we celebrated a campmate’s birthday with cake and cookies (Happy Birthday Leah!). To finish off the night with a Maritime Studies themed exploratory activity, we watched the 1937 Captains Courageous movie.
