Weather / Wind and Sail Plan: Four lower sails and jib topsail
Description of where we are sailing: Heading E towards George’s Bank.

To start off the morning, C watch began the first dawn watch of the trip at
0100. We started by jibing the boat, which is a maneuver that involves
turning the boat so the stern passes through the wind. Later in the morning,
C watch, joined by A watch, set the main sail as we continued to sail
through a marine preservation, north of Boston Harbor.

We all enjoyed a chickpea curry for lunch, as B watch was preparing for the
afternoon watch. During afternoon watch, the B watch set the jib sail and
jib topsail. At 1430, we all gathered together for our first all crew class.
Deck watch group C presented the course of the boat and the distance
traveled from noon the 16th to noon the 17th/today. Science group C
presented water and air temp variation as well as the water depth variation.
After presenting the data during class, we practiced our man over board
(MOB) maneuvers and successfully retrieved our test buoys. Another procedure
we practiced was jibing, all hands on deck, to learn how to use the Neuston
Net!

The Neuston Net is a tool that Science uses to capture zooplankton on the
surface of the ocean. Earlier today when practice this maneuver a jellyfish
and few zooplanktons! Tonight C watch, during the Evening watch, they will
be casting the Neuston Net as well as handling a few sails to loop us
towards the end of the Watch.
