Description of where we are sailing: Georges Bank

The dawn watch was treated to a really nice sunrise that had an orange and yellow glow off the silky smooth ocean. After dawn watch C watch did several science deployments during the morning shift. Such as CTD, phytonet, neuston tow, shipek grab, hydrophone, and secchi disk. The CTD(conductivity temperature depth) measures the salinity of the water and temperature given a certain depth. Shipek grab scoops a portion of sea floor sediments that’s often teaming with life.

In class today was the first time we put up the ships full complement of sails, which included a new type of sails called kites. One of them is called the raffee also known as the party hat because it’s shaped like a triangle and on top of the mast.

Dinner today was a very 4th of July themed barbecue that included hot dogs and hamburgers to give a taste of the festivities from home despite not having an actual barbecue grill. The closest things we have to fireworks are the beautiful stars and the milky way. ?
