0030 on August 4th. Seven brave high schoolers emerge from down below. It’s
freezing. The wind is blowing. Visibility is heavily impaired by the fog.
But nevertheless, they persevere. A watch’s dawn watch was intense, it was
fueled by hot chocolate and pumpkin bread intermixed with conversations
about seasonal drinks, and eerie whale sounds. By the time the rotation was
over, we were cold, wet and enlivened by the beauty of the sea in the night.
After a restorative rest, the watches met for class and learned about the
CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) device and how salinity, temperature
and depth affect the stratification of the sea. The day started out foggy,
then turned to bright blue, and then intermittent heavy down pours.  In
between the rain we saw a beautiful sunset and took golden hour pictures and
noticed a passing cruise ship. While the Emerald Princess looked like a
comfortable escape from the oncoming rain, we ultimately decided that our
voyage on the Corwith Cramer was much more hard core and meaningful then
lounging on a full service cruise ship. Morale is high and we look forward
to continuing our journey!
