Christiansted Dock – St. Croix

Hello from St Croix! Our last day before our first sail has been educational and exploratory; we started with delicious breakfast and a hike, stopped by the East End Marine Park (EEMP), worked through some drills and routines aboard, enjoyed a rainbow, and prepared to get underway.

We got to meet several experts in St. Croix’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems: Professor Olasee Davis from UVI, and Kelcie Troutman from EEMP, both of whom shared some of their expertise with us. Professor Davis led us on a phenomenal hike up Goat Hill to see the easternmost point in the United States (plus a gorgeous view, see below!) and taught us about some of the plants that dominate the eastern end of the island.

Kelcie explained her role as the first local director of this Marine Protected Area and their ongoing conservation and mitigation efforts in the EEMP. She highlighted the importance of collaboration with fishermen and community members in supporting healthy fish and invertebrate populations.

We are also starting to contribute to boat checks and night watches – thanks to the crew for all their patient guidance and knowhow! We are antsy to get underway and hoping for fair winds to sail around St. Croix to Frederiksted. Check back soon for updates about the trip!

Shout Outs: Love to Mama, Dad, Maya, Sam, Mimi, Pa, Grandma, Cole, Bowdoin and Charleston friends, and blog enthusiasts near and far. Miss y’all and looking forward to hugs before too long!
