Moored in Crocus Bay, Anguilla

Winds E, Force 4

We made it to Anguilla, Yeaaaaaa. I’ve been having an amazing time on the boat and in the three islands we’ve visited over the last 4 weeks–from the sailing to our days on land. Also, it has been great to be able to snorkel over amazing coral reefs and to see, firsthand, all those fish we learned about on shore.

First off, we started the trip in St. Croix, which is an amazing place with such cool people and an awesome new place to live in. Also, I was happy to be back on the Corwith Crammer. We started our week with tours and hiking, taking in amazing views, and had a fun time swimming. One of the best days was after we had moved the boat to the other side of the island to Frederiksted. That’s the day we got an amazing historic tour of most of the town, learned more about the fort there, and just the overall effect of tourism on St. Croix, which was really cool. Then, in the afternoon, we had time off until around 2100. We were able to walk around the town and got to go shopping and have some very good smoothies from a local cafe. Then we went to a nearby beach and swam around, took a nice long walk down the beach, collected shells, and just had a relaxing time off the boat.

After our time in St. Croix, we sailed off to Dominica. Most of the time, we went upwind, and we were sailing on bumpy seas for 6 days straight, which was very fun but also made me seasick on one or two of the days. I pushed through and had the most fun and sleep I’ve had in a while, yeaaa!! Then we arrived in Portsmouth, Dominica, where we were able to do some adventuring ashore, visiting another fort overlooking the cove and city they were protecting. Then we had a fun day around the city. The next day, we had a tour of the Kalinago territory, which was a really awesome experience. We started off by learning how to make a basket and made bracelets, which was cool. Then we went to learn about farming in the territory, and we also got to make cassava bread and other food. It was an awesome experience I never would have thought I would have. I had an amazing time snorkeling on the reefs, too, and just being in Dominica.

Now we’ve arrived in Anguilla. Which I think is my favorite island so far, which is just awesome to me. We’ve had so much free time so far here. Started off getting to Anguilla a day earlier, which was great. We had free time on land that night, spent a while on the beach, then went to this cute restaurant at the top of the hill, walking into town. Then, on the first full day, we went ashore for a community meeting and just checked in about the trip so far. It was fun to just hear how people are liking the trip and just how well I’ve connected with people. Afterwards, we had more time off, where I stayed in the beach area, where we got lunch, and then snorkeled around on the beach. I love this beach so much; the water is really blue, and you can see so many different colors. I just really love the area.

Today, on the 17th of March, we got to talk to Clarissa Lloyd from the Anguilla National Trust. She works with on-land and in-water conservation projects and also teaches about the history of Anguilla. It was so great to learn about that history and about how successful her organizations’s conservation projects have been. One of the coolest things is that she’s been able to watch the mangroves she’s planted grow a lot, and they’re seeing their successes throughout the years, surviving and thriving. Then I went back to the boat, caught up on some work, and hung out with some people for most of the afternoon, which was just an amazing day overall.

Shout outs: I’ve been having an amazing time on this trip. I am also missing everyone. I love you guys, and I hope everyone is having a good semester and a good March.
