Our First Full Day in Woods Hole

It is only our second day in Woods Hole, but a strong rivalry has begun to form between the SEASCape program and the Pre-College program. Both teams are furiously preparing to face off in a game of capture the flag on August 3. But behind all the fun, we have been hard at work.

Our first day on campus was busy with learning, starting with a series of interactive activities promoting diversity and inclusion. One of the activities included a silent and confusing card game with a surprising twist at the end–each group had been given a set of different rules! By inspiring creative solutions to conflict, the game demonstrated real-life issues surrounding communication and cultural differences.

After a filling lunch, we were introduced to Dr. Blake Cole, our lead instructor for the program. We discussed ongoing research at the nearby Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, varying from projects concerning toxic algal blooms drifting to Arctic waters to using cameras to track the motion of naturally occurring foam generated from breaking waves. We ended our academic day with Blue Planet II One Ocean, a “gorgeous high-definition aquamarine cinematography feat. charismatic macrofauna”.

The group then headed down to the beach for the first time. The afternoon was spent hunting for sea glass and crabs, swimming far into the ocean, relaxing on the rocks, and finding some starfish.

Dinner was DIY fish tacos, and, after a long day, the three of us were hoping for a fun and relaxing night playing cards in our houses. We were, however, (pleasantly) surprised to learn that we had been assigned to write this very blog! So, now we gather on the staircase in A-House, drinking tap water, eating popcorn, and working on this post.
