WHOI Matey!
Author: Hayden M., Sofia V., and Naviya R.
On our third day in Falmouth, we began our day by listening to a guest lecture by Dr. Heather Page about coral reefs. To follow up we watched Chasing Coral, a moving documentary advocating for the conservation of coral.
We headed for lunch and ate delicious chicken curry. After lunch, we had another guest lecture with leading paleoceanographer Dr. Jesse Farmer, who taught us how to “time travel” by using sediments from the ocean floor.
And since we had so much fun the first time, we went back to the beach and played a game of Keep Away between A house and B house in the ocean.
After a good night’s sleep, we were ready to tackle Woods Hole. We began by touring the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) dock, where we saw a
Remote Environmental Monitoring Unit (REMUS) that was attacked by a shark and a dock for diving training.
We continued the day by hearing from Professor Blake’s PhD advisor about his scientific projects that scan the ocean floor. After that, we had time to walk and shop around the town (and get ice cream!!). When we got back to Falmouth, we had a quick lecture and then ended the day by having a pizza night.
