Description of where we are sailing: Alongside Dyers Dock in Woods Hole, MA
Welcome aboard! So excited to welcome our new shipmates aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer. We now have 36 crew onboard: 15 professional crew from SEA and 21 newly arrived student crew. Before we can set sail, we must prepare our new shipmates for their responsibilities as members of the crew. There is so much to learn. Stepping aboard the Corwith Cramer is like crossing the border into a new country, with a new ‘language’ and customs. The students must learn the ways of the ship before we can leave the dock.
To recap our first day, students have moved into their bunks, started to learn their way around the ship, and been divided into three separate Watches.
A Watch: Dylan, Olivia, Bella, Sophia, Aubie, Linden, Freya
B Watch: Christina, Cooper, Sayer, Kendall, Abbey, Bretton, Harold
C Watch: Molly, Schad, Quinn, Virginia, Reagan, Penelope, Adam, Max
Students then spent the rest of the afternoon getting to know the professional crew, learning how to keep the ship safe with the hourly Boat Check, and learning their individual responsibilities during various emergency scenarios. No time to waste on this all-important training because we set sail tomorrow!
Final training for the night included a safety orientation to the galley and to the engine room – arguably the two most important spaces on the ship. One powers the ship with electricity while the other powers us with delicious food! Speaking of the galley, our first dinner onboard was Taco Thursdays! with plenty of healthy fillings/toppings to satisfy all tastes.
The mood and morale about the ship is electric; there is so much excitement and anticipation. We have worked so hard the past three weeks preparing for this adventure aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer! The time has finally arrived!
